UKMTO issued a new warning on 8 November reporting a tanker fire and crew evacuation eight nautical miles northwest of Khasab, Oman. It dates the incident to 19:20 UTC on 7 November, citing military authorities.
The delayed report, numbered 199-26, does not identify the vessel, the cause or the crew’s condition. The incident is classified as suspicious activity.
Caution for passing vessels
The service advises caution and reporting of suspicious activity while investigations continue. Its notice does not establish a connection with other recent rescue operations in the area.
UKMTO operates a voluntary reporting system in the Middle East and Indian Ocean region and serves as a contact point for emergencies. It provides verified security information to mariners, shipping companies and authorities. The reporting framework gives those responsible for ship operations a channel for sharing incidents and receiving information relevant to their voyage decisions.
Wider concern for seafarers
In an earlier statement on 6 November, IMO’s Council called for shipping lanes to remain safe and open and for seafarers to be protected regardless of nationality. It stressed that crews have no control over geopolitical disputes. That intervention concerns the broader security environment affecting merchant shipping; it is not a finding about this particular tanker.
